Lisbon has a way of stealing your heart. I’ve been to plenty of European cities, but none have ever captured my heart quite like Lisbon.
Picture azulejo-covered streets, fado flowing from tucked-away bars, nights on Pink Street, and sunsets at miradouros that stop you in your tracks. You can hit the beach by day, find rooftop bars by night, and still feel like there’s more to discover. Trust me, one trip will never be enough.
Here’s my guide of 10 things to do on your first trip to Lisbon.
1. Do a Free Walking Tour
As an avid traveller, I’ve found that doing a Free Walking Tour within the first couple of days will help you navigate the city faster. Usually led by locals, these tours offer expert insights into the city’s history and culture while also revealing hidden gems you’d likely miss on your own. You can also ask questions and get insider tips on the best food, nightlife or what to see next, making your trip that much richer and authentic from the very start.
You might be wondering how it’s free (because when is anything really free?), well, I booked my walking tour through GuruWalk. The one I chose, Free Tour Lisbon: Essential History, Fun Facts and Free Tastings, and I have to say, it exceeded my expectations. Our guide, João, was not only incredibly knowledgeable but also had a fantastic sense of humour, which made the tour all the more enjoyable. And the highlight? A complimentary pastel de nata! Overall, it was an excellent experience that I wholeheartedly recommend.

GuruWalk offers free walking tours on a ‘pay-what-you-please’ basis. So, what does that mean? At the end of the tour, you decide what the experience was worth—whether it’s 5 euros, 100 euros, or even nothing at all. That said, the guides do such an outstanding job that it feels only right to show your appreciation.
2. Visit Praça do Comércio
One of Lisbon’s most iconic spots, Praça do Comércio is a stunning riverside square that perfectly captures the city’s vibrant energy. Surrounded by grand yellow buildings and overlooking the Tagus River, it’s a great place to soak up history, watch street performers, or enjoy a coffee while people-watching. Whether you’re starting your day or winding down, this lively plaza is a must-visit for any trip to Lisbon.
3. Explore Lisbon’s Coolest Creative Hub at LX Factory
Once an old industrial complex, LX Factory has transformed into one of Lisbon’s coolest hangout spots. Located in Alcântara, It’s a mix of street art, indie shops, cafés, restaurants, and creative studios all tucked beneath the iconic Ponte 25 de Abril bridge. You can spend hours wandering through quirky boutiques, grabbing brunch, or browsing one of the city’s most beautiful bookstores, Ler Devagar. Whether you go for the food, the vibe, or the photo ops, LX Factory is the perfect place to experience Lisbon’s creative side.

4. Discover Lisbon’s Flavours at Time Out Market
If you’re a foodie then Time Out Market is an absolute must. Set inside a beautifully restored market hall, it brings together some of Lisbon’s best chefs, restaurants, and local vendors under one roof. You can try everything from fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese dishes to creative desserts and cocktails – all under one roof! It’s the perfect spot to sample a little bit of everything, soak up the lively atmosphere, and see why Lisbon’s food scene is one of the best in Europe.
5. Visit the Cristo Rei
No, you’re not in Brazil, though you might do a double take when you spot Cristo Rei towering over the river. Lisbon’s answer to Rio’s Christ the Redeemer stands proudly on the south bank, offering killer views of the city and the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge. It’s a chance to explore the opposite side of the river and getting there is part of the fun: take the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas (only €1.50!), then hop on a bus that takes you right outside. The views across the river are breathtaking, easily some of my favourites in Lisbon, and make every step of the journey worthwhile.
Top Tip: for the best experience, head there late afternoon or evening and soak in a breathtaking sunset.

6. Experience Lisbon’s Vibrant Nightlife in Bairro Alto
When night falls, Bairro Alto becomes the heartbeat of Lisbon’s nightlife. Its cobbled streets come alive with music, laughter, and the clinking of glasses from lively bars and cozy taverns. Visitors can enjoy traditional fado performances or head to rooftop bars for stunning city views and expertly mixed cocktails. The atmosphere is vibrant yet laid-back, offering a perfect mix of local culture and international flair. For anyone looking to experience Lisbon after dark, Bairro Alto is the place to be.
7. Take a trip to Belém for Lisbon’s Famous Custard Tarts
No trip to Lisbon is complete without tasting the city’s most famous treat, the pastel de nata, and there’s no better place to experience it than Pastéis de Belém. Located near the Jerónimos Monastery, this historic bakery has been serving its secret-recipe custard tarts since 1837. Fresh from the oven, the delicate pastries have a perfectly crisp, flaky shell filled with creamy, caramelized custard and a hint of cinnamon. A visit to Pastéis de Belém isn’t just a snack stop, it’s a taste of Lisbon’s sweetest tradition.
8. Lose Yourself in Lisbon’s Best Views
Lisbon is packed with miradouros, so you’ll never be far from an incredible view. ‘Miradouros‘ is the Portuguese word for ‘viewpoints’ and these spots are perfect for snapping those envy-inducing Instagram shots. Everyone has there favourite and I’m sure you’ll discover your own. If you were to ask me, Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara should definitely make your list to visit.

9. Have a beach day at Costa da Caparica
If you’re looking for a break from the city and a relaxing day in the sun, head to the coastal town of Costa da Caparica. Just across the bridge from Lisbon, this seaside escape boasts over 26 kilometres of golden sand and rolling Atlantic waves. Conveniently close to the capital, it’s a favourite summer retreat for locals seeking sea, surf, and sunshine. Whether you’re planning a laid-back family day by the water or chasing waves along the coast, Costa da Caparica offers the best of both worlds – lively beach bars and surf schools balanced with quiet stretches of sand perfect for unwinding.
10. Enjoy Cocktails at SUD Lisboa
If you’re after rooftop vibes with a view, SUD Lisboa is the place to be. The infinity pool looks out over the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge, and it’s every bit as stunning as it sounds. It’s definitely a splurge, you’ll need to pay extra to sit on the rooftop but you’re on holiday, you deserve a treat! The cocktails were delicious, the setting is gorgeous, and it’s the perfect spot to unwind in style. They do serve food too, but I only popped in for drinks, and honestly, that was more than enough to make it worth the visit.
